What's familiar and what's tricky

German and English share Indo-European roots, so many basic words are similar: 'Haus' and 'house', 'Apfel' and 'apple'.
Both languages use the Latin alphabet, so reading is easy for English speakers.
Many grammatical structures, like the present tense, are similar: 'Ich bin' = 'I am'.
Compound words are common in both languages, like 'Handschuh' (hand + shoe) for 'glove'.
⚠️ What to watch for
German has four cases (nominative, accusative, dative, genitive) that change articles and adjectives. English has lost most of its case system.
Word order is stricter in German, especially in subordinate clauses where the verb goes to the end.
Separable verbs like 'aufstehen' split in the present tense: 'Ich stehe um 7 auf.'
Gender is not just natural: 'Mädchen' (girl) is neuter, not feminine. You must learn the article with each noun.
